Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and Damned

Niko Belic takes a back seat to Johnny Klebits on this rollercoaster of greatness.

Reviewer: JustPlainViewtiful

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost And Damned is a downloadable content add-on exclusively for the Xbox 360.

In Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost And Damned you play as Johnny Klebitz, Vice President of the infamous biker gang, The Lost Biker Club. He's a metal rocking all around badass who already has a reputation and friends. After your leader Billy Grey, the President of the club is put into rehab the game starts off with a flashy cutscene of you and your gang going to pick Billy up from his final day. Johnny who's been leading the club with business on the mind while Billy is more focused on having fun and kicking ass. The Lost And Damned plays very differently compared to IV, you already are infamous in Liberty City and your personality and apperance is drasticly different to Niko Bellic. Throughout the game you'll deal with rival gang, The Angels of Death and the police, you'll always have backup though with four other gang members.

If you're firmilar to Grand Theft Auto IV's missons then you'll notice that Niko actually meets Johnny a few times throughout his story. The infamous mission where Niko is trying to sell cocaine, but it turns out they got set up by the police, well Johnny was there. Throughout the story you'll also meet up with other characters like Elizabeta and Playboy X. It really keeps The Lost And Damned connected to IV and it is pretty cool to see other sides of a story played during missions.

The cutsences like in IV are fantastic, they bring the perfect amount of drama and easily explain what's happeneing and what exactly the mission is. The Lost And Damned bares it all with one of the cutscenes early in the game, it's not what you think though, it's actually a male who exposes, sick right?

There's not as many memorable characters mainly because the game is shorter then the original so characters don't get to branch out like they would in IV.

Overall the story if you play strictly mission to mission will take around ten hours which is more then $20 worth as some games only sum up to seven hours for $60.

Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost And Damned plays out exatcly like the original with some twist. Like always your going to go to point A to get a mission then go to point B like IV, but this time you're in a motorcycle club so you'll always have your gang with you. While driving to missions you'll be on your motorcycle either following or leading. If you're following then you'll have to stay behind the leader and an enblem for The Lost and driving on it for a certain amount of time will give you health boost and open up more dialogue. Driving is spiced up because you'll sometimes do races to locations.

The first part of the content is very similar to IV, but in the third part of the game missions become more diverse and are great. There nothing like the bank robbing mission, but for downloadable content it is vey appricated. Missions like stealing motorcycles from The Angels of Death and hyjacking a police bus full of convicts are unforgetable though.

The phone from the original game is brought back, but there are some more elements to it. Throughout missions you'll call for back up from two fellow members. You can call up Terry or Clay and they'll bring some friends to help you out with enemies. Friends will call on you a lot less to hang out with you which is really nice. When you do hang out with them your relationship will be strenghtened with them and there toughness level will increase making them much more useful in missions.

There's a few more mini-games included in TLAD. You can now do arm wrestling and air hockey. These mini-games were brought some more varity to the gameplay and keeps things much more fresh. There's also some new gameplay options including a race mode where you ride on a motorcycle and you have a baseball bat to hit riders next to you. There's also a new gang wars game mode where The Lost and The Angels of Death fight over teritory similar to San Andreas' gang wars.

There's a lot more new sites to go look at internet cafes so it's like all the gameplay as expanded. The one strange thing is that on the map a lot of locations included in IV do not show in The Lost And Damned, it don't show resturants and such which is a little annyoing so looking at the map that's given with the original game is annoying.

There are several new items included in the game. There are five new weapons included. The sawed-off shotgun is the first weapon you get right at the beginning, it can be used on your motorcycle and is very powerful and has a nice wide and long range. The second weapon, the semi-automatic pistol which is very weak, but fires very fast. The third, is a grenade launcher which is pretty powerful like the RPG. Fourth, pipe bombs are unlocked towards the middle and takes longer for a grenade to explode. And finally, the semi-automatic shotgun is unlocked and is very powerful and quick. These weapons are used more then the original weapons, but you can still swap with older ones.

There are three more vehicals too. There is a new van and two new motorcycles. Playing as Johnny he is much more used to driving motorcycles so the handling is much more forgiving and very nice. Cars and trucks are much nicer on handling is good too. Sadly these new handling controls do not transfer over to Niko.

There are six brand new multiplayer modes included in the downloadable content. Witness Protectection is where one team plays as The Lost and are trying to destroy a bus full of witnesses and the other team plays as the NOOSE who are trying to protect the bus. Second, Race is based of the racing missions in the story mode and you can hit people with bats just like the single player. Third, Lone Wolf Biker where one player must defend himself where everyone is trying to kill that person. Fourth, Own The City is based off San Andreas' gang wars where teams try to take over sections of Liberty City. Fifth, Club Business is based on the Mafia mode in four where one team of eight players complete task. Finally, Chopper VS Chopper which is when one player motorcyclelist trys to travel somewhere where the other player in a helicopter is trying to stop the rider. All of the modes are very fresh and will bring you back to play if you haven't played IV's multiplayer mode in a while.

If you didn't like the gameplay in IV that's not going to change, but if you liked it then it's a must buy.
